The first weekend of the DBGS All Star Tournament was a huge success for both the organization and the City of Diamond Bar. During the three days of the tournament, 23 teams came to play their hearts out for the 1st and 2nd place trophies as the final prize.
The event had 245 families from as far as Westlake Village in the Valley and El Rio in San Diego coming to the city and supporting the local eateries and shopping centers.
The High School Division had teams that were rated nationally and that brought out the competitiveness in all the teams that participated.
All of the venues of Peterson Park, Pantera Park and Sycamore Canyon the ring of the bats could be heard. The High School ladies really put on a show and every game offered its’ own excitement. Fantastic team efforts shown in the execution of precise double plays and the individual efforts of the pitchers and batters had left all the fans guessing as to who the next collegiate stars will be over the next few years.
The team left standing after the 3 days was the team from El Segundo, they were a well coached lot and showed the true heart of a champion as they were presented the 1 st place trophies from the coach they had just defeated. The runners up were a scrappy team, the Pico Rivera Tempests, who had fought from the first game on Friday night until the Finals where they received their trophies as Runners Up.
Down in the U-6 division they had their own excitement. These young ones showed up to play and were not to be outdone by the “big girls’ in the High School division. Who isn’t afraid of six year old swinging a bat? They came from Saugus, Sylmar, and from our neighbors in Chino, Pico Rivera and West Covina and the homegrown girls from Diamond Bar.
These gals took their game seriously, this division is owned by the hitters. Scores like 13 to 10, 15 to 13, and 14 to 9 kept everyone’s attention down to the last out. Going down to the wire these players fought for the trophies for first and second place. The semi-finals produce teams from La Puente , Charter Oaks, Fountain Valley and West Covina. The tension was high for the Finals which pitted Charter Oaks and West Covina, and at the end the tiny titans from Charter Oaks lifted their first place trophies high into the air.
The 15Th Annual All Star Tournament will continue into the weekend and close on Father’s Day.
